The Common Gear Motor Types and Variations

Gear Motor Malaysia is a well established technology that integrates gear reducer with either an AC or DC electric motor. The gear and the motors are combined into one unit.

Gear Motors are used to deliver high torque at low horsepower or low speed. By doing this, it allows small motors to generate higher torque.

Usually industrial gear motors use AC motors, but they can also use DC motors, a lot of which are used in automotive applications. Gear motors have a lot of applications, for example, in the automotive and beverage industries or in every intralogistics company.

A way to categorize gear motors is by the type of gear use. Common types of gears to paired with a motor are:

  • Bevel
  • Helical

  • Worm gears

Each of these types has advantages and disadvantages. For example, helical gears have more torque capacity than spur gears and worm gears are better in the low torque range and good for high speed reductions.

Inline Gear Motors

Inline gear motors are also called parallel shaft because it is where the gear shaft is parallelled with the motor shaft.

Right Angle Gear Motor

The right angle gear motor is where the output shaft is at a 90 degree angle to the motor shaft.

Finally, many refer to a planetary configuration. The planetary configuration describes the configuration of the gears inside the gear motor. These types of gear motors tend to be smaller and also offer high torque density.
